Who We Are:
We at First Assembly believe that God has a purpose and a plan for
everyone. Our church is a member of the worldwide fellowship of
the Assemblies of God, over 54 million people strong, and the
Alabama District. Through corporate worship, practical teaching
from God's Word, prayer for needs, and purposed evangelism, we
are endeavoring to become a "Community of Faith, Hope, and
Love."
History of First Assembly of God Tuscaloosa, Alabama
|
Tuscalooa's First Assembly of God began in the summer of 1951 when Rev. Charles F. Norton held
initial services in a tent on what was then Northington Campus. Later, a former synagogue in
downtown Tuscaloosa was purchased by the new work. The first service was held on Easter
Sunday, 1952.
Two pastors followed Rev. Norton over the next five years. Rev. Harold Oswalt served from March,
1953 to September, 1955. Rev. Talmadge McNab, a former Army Chaplain, served from September,
1955 when he was recalled to active duty.
Rev. Robert H. Spence assumed the pulpit as the fourth pastor May 1, 1957. Expansions were
carried out to create additional Sunday School space. In August, 1960 the church purchased the
present seven-acre tract as a future building site.
By 1966 First Assembly had launched into a building program on the new property. The first
worship service in the new facility took place October 30, 1966. Dedication of the new campus
followed on May 7, 1967.
In August of 1968 Rev. Nelson White became the fifth pastor. His tenure exceeded all previous
pastors as he led the church for the next twelve years.
In September of 1980 Rev. Robert Couch assumed the pulpit as the sixth pastor. New church
furnishings were acquired during his tenure.
In March of 1982 Rev. Billy Glover became the seventh pastor. He led the church into a time of
growth and expansion. Pastor Glover was elected Alabama District's Sunday School and Men's
Director which necessitated his resignation in March 1990. Rev. Charles Hamby followed as the
eighth pastor. He served the church until May 1994.
In August of 1994 Rev. Charles Lenn assumed the pulpit as the ninth pastor and presently serves in
that capacity. The church expanded with a youth/children' building in 1999 and is presently
planning the launch into a major building project.
